HIV Treatment

HIV treatment, or antiretroviral therapy (ART), are drugs developed to disrupt the action of HIV.

ART fall in to several groups, or "classes." Each class attacks HIV differently and has diverse risks and benefits. To maximize the impact against HIV, a treatment regimen is made up of drugs from different classes.

ART is commonly researched and prescribed for people starting HIV treatment in 3 class combinations, each with its own risks and benefits:

  • 1 NNRTI + 2 NRTIs
  • 1 "boosted" PI + 2 NRTIs
  • 1 integrase inhibitor + 2 NRTIs
